What Is a Good FPS for Gaming? 30 vs 60 vs 120 vs 240

Explainer · Updated for 2026

FPS (frames per second) is how many images your PC draws each second. Higher is smoother — but how much you actually need depends on the games you play and the monitor you own.

The frame rate tiers

Your monitor sets the ceiling

Frame rate only helps up to your monitor's refresh rate. A 60Hz display can only show 60 FPS, so 200 FPS on a 60Hz screen is mostly wasted (aside from slightly lower input lag). To feel the benefit of high FPS, you need a 120Hz, 144Hz, or faster monitor.

What matters more: high FPS or stable FPS?

Consistency beats raw numbers. A steady 60 FPS feels far better than a rate that swings between 90 and 40, because the stutters are what your eyes notice. When tuning settings, aim for a frame rate your PC can hold consistently rather than the highest possible peak.

How to pick your target

Play slow single-player games? A locked 60 is plenty. Play competitive shooters? Aim for 120+ on a high-refresh monitor. Match your hardware, settings, and display to that goal rather than chasing numbers you can't see.
