DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS: Which Upscaler Is Best?

Upscaling is the biggest free performance win in modern PC gaming. It renders the game at a lower resolution and intelligently scales it up, giving you more FPS with minimal quality loss. Here's how the three main options compare.

How upscaling works

Instead of rendering every pixel at your full resolution, the GPU renders fewer pixels and reconstructs the rest. The result is a big frame rate boost — often 30–70% — that lets weaker cards punch above their weight or lets strong cards enable ray tracing.

NVIDIA DLSS

DLSS uses dedicated AI hardware on NVIDIA RTX cards and generally offers the best image quality of the three. Newer versions are excellent, and frame generation can multiply frame rates further. The catch: it only works on NVIDIA RTX GPUs.

AMD FSR

FSR is open and works on almost any graphics card, including older NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel hardware. That broad compatibility is its biggest strength. Image quality has improved a lot with newer versions, though DLSS often still has a slight edge in fine detail.

Intel XeSS

XeSS runs best on Intel Arc GPUs but also works on other cards. Quality sits between FSR and DLSS in many titles, and it's a strong option if you own an Arc card.

Which should you use?

Use whatever your hardware supports best: DLSS on RTX cards, XeSS on Intel Arc, and FSR on everything else (or when a game lacks the others). On the "Quality" preset, all three look close to native while delivering a major FPS boost — turn it on in almost every demanding game.
