Why Are My Games Lagging? FPS Drops Explained
"Lag" can mean two very different things: network lag in online games, or low FPS and stutter from your PC. Knowing which one you have is the first step to fixing it.
Network lag vs low FPS
Network lag shows up as rubber-banding, delayed actions, or teleporting enemies in online games — it's about your internet connection. Low FPS makes the whole game look choppy, even offline — it's about your hardware and settings.
Fixing network lag
- Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi where possible.
- Close other devices or apps hogging bandwidth.
- Choose a game server closer to your region.
Fixing low FPS
- Lower the heaviest graphics settings and enable upscaling.
- Update GPU drivers and close background apps.
- Make sure the game is using your dedicated GPU, not integrated graphics.
- Check for thermal throttling if FPS drops after a few minutes.
Find the real cause
Use an on-screen overlay to watch FPS, CPU, GPU and network latency together. Whichever spikes when the game lags points you to the fix.
